Segate Expansion 2TB formating Mac OS extended

I recently acquired a Seagate Expansion 2TB USB drive. However when I inserted the drive into my Mac and tried to format the drive with Mac OS Extended (or Journaled), it would halt with an error.

The solution was pretty simple, launch the disc utility and select the drive, right click and chose partition. Choose 1 partition and in the options menu use the GUID partition table.

Hit apply and you are good to go!

Thank you so much! Will I still be able to use the external HD on my PC? I will be transferring files from both my mac and PC.

Candyce, you would be able to use it on your PC, however you would need to format it as NTFS or FAT in order for the PC to see it. Windows can not read the Mac OS extended format by default.

For use with a PC, would this work? Once you've formatted it with one partition (per your instructions), could you go back and partition it with at least one partition that is FAT32? For example, select one partition 1.5 TB with GUID, and then a second 500 GB with FAT 32?

Paige, yes you could do that configuration, however you would need to do this at the time of format or you will need to reformat the drive again if you already have on partition on it. There are some commercial and open source tools that will allow you to change a partition map after the fact, but in this case where the drive is external, it's easier to just copy all of the data off then reformat.

Also, as long as you a running a modern Windows OS (2000 - Windows 7), you would want to use NTFS instead of FAT.

Thanks! Now is there a way of reading NTFS on a drive thru a mac using OSX? My hd now has all my info but is read only (NTFS) is there a way I can reformatt to be read/writable with my info still on there?

Thanks for the help

Thanks for the post! I'll reformat my next Seagate Expansion drive with the GUID option on.

@cameron - You can use MacFUSE to read/write to the NTFS volume. The performance using the free version isn't excellent but it'll get the job done well.

As for reformatting, you'll need to copy the information off, reformat then copy the info back.

Thank you so much! I thought the disk was faulty or something, getting ready to give it up as a lost cause. You've officially saved the day.
